Scotland uses a different scheme.

Unlike England, Wales and Northern Ireland — which use the FSA's 0–5 Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) — Scotland operates the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS), administered by Food Standards Scotland.

FHIS doesn't use a numeric score. Instead, each venue receives one of three outcomes at inspection: Pass and Eat Safe (the highest mark), Pass (meets hygiene standards), or Improvement Required (action needed).

We list Scottish venues alongside FHRS-rated ones across the UK — but with distinct badges so you can tell them apart.

FHIS outcomes

EAT SAFE
Pass and Eat Safe — meets food safety requirements and qualifies for the Eat Safe award (highest outcome).
PASS
Pass — meets food safety and hygiene requirements at the time of inspection.
IMPROVE
Improvement Required — action is required to meet food safety standards.
